Belly of the Dragon — A Hidden Gem Near Hurricane, Utah

The Belly of the Dragon is a unique geological formation located just off Highway 59 near Hurricane, Utah, between St. George and Zion National Park. This tunnel-shaped passage carved through sandstone creates an otherworldly experience that feels like walking through the belly of a giant dragon. It is one of Southern Utah's most fun and unusual free attractions.

The Experience

The formation is essentially a large drainage culvert created by nature where water has carved a passage through the red sandstone. Walking through the dimly lit tunnel with its curved, smooth walls feels like entering another world. The acoustics inside amplify sounds, creating an eerie and exciting atmosphere. At around 50 feet long, the passage is short enough for kids to enjoy but impressive enough to wow adults. Bring a flashlight for the best experience as the interior can be quite dark.

Visiting

The Belly of the Dragon trailhead is located right off Highway 59 with a small pullout for parking. The walk from the road to the formation takes just a few minutes on easy terrain. It is completely free to visit and makes an excellent quick stop when driving between St. George and Zion National Park. Families with kids especially love this attraction — children feel like real adventurers exploring the dragon's belly. Combine with nearby Sand Hollow State Park for a full day of Southern Utah exploration.
