Whitmore Canyon Overlook

Whitmore Canyon Overlook, also called Whitmore Point, is a remote viewpoint in Grand Canyon–Parashant National Monument in northern Arizona, managed jointly by the National Park Service and the BLM. It looks out over the Colorado River from about 1,000 feet above it, roughly 9 miles west of Toroweap, in country shaped by basalt lava flows and cinder cones.

Getting There

This is a serious backcountry trip, not a roadside stop. The NPS says it requires a high-clearance 4x4 with rugged all-terrain tires; the final seven miles on BLM 1045 drop about 1,500 feet over lava rock. Carry the BLM Arizona Strip Visitor Map, full-size spare tires, extra fuel and water, and expect no cell service. The route runs south from the St. George area via Mt. Trumbull.

Camping and Nearby

The small Fumarole Campground (five sites) is on NPS 1263, and the historic Mt. Trumbull Schoolhouse is along the way.

Plan Ahead

The only lodging out on this part of the Arizona Strip is the Bar 10 Ranch, a working guest ranch above Whitmore Wash that hosts Grand Canyon river-trip exchanges.
